about
This is my first attempt at a bedroom recording. It's not fancy, but I'm not a fancy lady.
So this is a song that I wrote based on the allegedly (ALLEGEDLY) true story of how the lead singer of my mom's girl band (circa the early 1990's) had a run in with Tori Amos and subsequently credits her with ruining her career. PLEASE NOTE: I do not now, nor have I ever, had anything against Tori Amos. She is extremely talented and I'm sure she's a lovely person, even if she does steal people's hairstyles... ALLEGEDLY.
lyrics
When I was a child you would sing with my mother
Songs of the hospital, songs of the other
People you'd met and who one day you hoped you would know
One night you were playing out in New York City
A woman walked in, she was dark haired and pretty
You didn't think twice when she spoke to you after the show
And your hair, it was wavy and red,
And it shone as you shook
Your head as you laughed
When she told you that she liked your look
And you swore on your life
One day you'd be famous
And that might have been true
If it wasn't for Tori Amos
You waited for weeks for a call from the label
You'd wanted to make it and hoped you'd be able
As the phone rang you answered, breath caught in your throat
He said, "Hello, how are you, I hope you've been well
I have to apologize, regret to tell
You that now it's a no, yes, from us, that's all that she wrote"
And you fought back the tears as he said it would be a different story
If he hadn't just signed this other girl singer named Tori
And you swore on your life
One day you'd be famous
And that might have been true
If it wasn't for Tori Amos
There are plenty of women with wavy red hair
It's quite a coincidence that hers was there
After she met you and told you that you could sing backup
I wonder if you've ever doubted the choice
To keep going solo and not lend your voice
To an artist who, twenty years later, charts still have her tracks up
And I'm not saying it's wrong to just keep on rocking
But in this particular instance, there was some stalking
And you swore on your life
One day you'd be famous
And that might have been true
If it wasn't for Tori Amos
Yes, you swore on your life
One day you'd be famous
And that might have been true
If it wasn't for Tori Amos
